Supporting Your Swimmer

Positive support

Supporting Your Swimmer

Gala days can feel just as nerve-wracking for parents as they are for swimmers. Your calm encouragement makes a real difference. Allow coaches to manage swimmers poolside, offer reassurance rather than pressure, and focus on effort and enjoyment over results. A relaxed, supportive approach helps swimmers feel confident, prepared and proud of their progress — whatever the outcome.

Your Role on the Day
Calm and consistent

Your steady presence matters more than you realise. Stay positive, avoid adding pressure, and let your swimmer take ownership of their performance while knowing you’re there to support them.

Before They Race
Setting the tone

Keep things relaxed and simple. Help them arrive prepared, remind them to listen to their coach, and focus on effort rather than outcome.

During the Gala
Trust the process

Once poolside, coaches take the lead. Your role is to cheer positively from the spectator area and let them grow in independence.

Handling Disappointment
Building resilience

Every swimmer has tough races and occasional disqualifications. Stay calm, listen first, and remind them that progress comes from learning.

Celebrating Progress
Long-term development

Notice improvements in skills, confidence and attitude — not just medals. Small steps forward build strong swimmers over time.

After Each Swim
Choose your words

Start with “Did you enjoy that?” or “I loved your effort.” Results matter less than how they handled the race.
