Types of Gala

Competitive swimming offers different types of competitions, designed to support swimmers at every stage of their development — from first races through to Championships.

Unlicensed Galas
Development racing

Informal events designed to build confidence and experience. Times are not submitted to Swim England Rankings and cannot be used for qualification.

Open Meets (Licensed)
Individual entry competitions

Swimmers enter events hosted by other clubs. Licensed by Swim England (Levels 1–4). Times count towards rankings and qualification.

County Championships
Yorkshire level

Swimmers who achieve the published County qualifying times compete against the best in Yorkshire. Times must be achieved at Licensed Meets.

Regional Championships
North East level

Higher qualifying standards than Counties. Held in Long Course (50m) pools and represent the next step in progression.

National Championships
Elite competition

The highest domestic level. Qualification is based on national rankings during the official qualification window.

Club Championships / In-House Gala
Internal competition

Our in-house event at Beverley Leisure Centre. A supportive introduction to racing for all Barracudas swimmers, including under 9s. Depending on the licence, times for swimmers aged 9+ may be recorded and used for Open Meets and County Championships.
